Effects of Aegle marmelos (L.) Methanolic Leaf Extracts on Cardiovascular Parameters in Diabetic Rats

Abstract: Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa is a widely found plant in India as well as in South Asia. For more than several centuries it is being widely used for its medicinal properties. The objective of the study was to evaluate the cardiovascular changes in alloxan induced diabetic rats treated with methanolic leaf extracts of Aegle marmelos. 5 treatment groups (namely control, diseased, low dose (100mg/kg), medium dose (250mg/kg) and high dose (500mg/kg) of methanolic leaf extracts were used in the study. The cardiovasculareffects were evaluated by the determination of Very-Low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL), Serum Sialic Acid, Glutathione Peroxidase, Serum Catalase, Ascorbic acid, Sodium, Potassium, and Chloride levels. High dose treatment group showed significant decrease in Very-Low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL), Serum Sialic Acid, Glutathione Peroxidase, Serum Catalase, Ascorbic acid, Sodium, Potassium, and Chloride levels when compared with the diseased treatment groups. Though Low and medium dose treated animals showed insignificant decrease in these cardiovascular parameters when compared with high dose treatment group as well as diseased group. The effects of high dose treatment on cardiovascular parameters were very significant as that of control group. Through the cardiovascular parameters it is evident that the highdose of methonolic leaf extract of Aegle marmelos can be used the treatment of diabetes and its cardiovascular complications.

Abstract: Balanites aegyptiaca (L.) Del. (Balanitaceae), a tropical plant is well known for its widespread uses in Burkina Faso traditional medicine. The present study aims to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of B. aegyptiaca trough the turpentine-induced inflammation. The aqueous acetone extracts of galls and leaves have been used to test the anti-inflammatory effects on adult male Wistar-Bratislava albino rats. Total leukocytes count was performed with an optical microscope (Olympus), using a Bürcker-Türk counting-chamber. The nitric oxides synthesis (NOx), the total oxidative status (TOS) and total antioxidant response (TAR) of the serum were measured using a colorimetric assay. The results have showed that all the extracts reduced significantly (p<0.0001) the total leukocytes and total nitrites and nitrates levels in the rats serum. The oxidative stress evaluation showed that the treatment with any dose of B. aegyptiaca gall and leaf extracts was significantly decreased (p<0.0001) the total oxidative status. Moreover, these extracts have been prevented the Turpentine oil induced inflammation by increasing the total antioxidant response. TAR increasing did correlated to TOS decrease by comparison with the inflammation group. In general, an interesting anti-inflammatory effect was found in this study with the greatest activity found in the gall extracts. B. aegyptiaca could then be a potential source of natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.

Abstract: Due to some undesirable secondary reaction of synthetic drugs, natural products and plants with medicinal properties are been exploited in controlling and treating many chronic diseases including diabetes. Oxidative stress has a major effects in diabetes and the difficulties associated with it including hepatotoxicity. Newbouldia laevis is a traditional medicinal plant known to possess antimicrobial, anticonvulsant, sedative, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antidiarrheal properties. However, there is scanty information on its utilization in diabetes management. This investigation was carried out to determine the potentials of aqueous ethanolic extract of Newbouldia laevis leaves to protect hepatic tissues of rats from diabetes caused by oxidative stress and hapatocellular injury. Diabetic condition was effected in rats by single intraperitoneal injection of alloxan. Rats were slaughtered by cervical dislocation after administration of Newbouldia leave extracts at dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg bw for 21 days. Hepatic tissues were analysed for catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) activities, lipid peroxidation, lipid profile and protein content were also evaluated. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) which are hepatic biomarkers were analysed in the blood serum. Significant reduction (p<0.05) of GSH, catalase, and SOD activities were effected by diabetes induction, also rise in hepatic biomarkers and lipid peroxidation was observed. Treatment with extract at 200 mg/kg caused significant (p<0.05) increased activities of the studied antioxidant biomarkers and reduced lipid peroxidation. It also led to a reduced activity of hepatic biomarkers. These results shows antioxidant protective properties of N. laevis leaves against rise in oxidative stress and hepatocellular injury in diabetic rat’s hepatic tissues at lower dose, indicating that the extract may possess antioxidant activities in diabetics.

Abstract: Resistance phenomena of infectious agents to synthesis drugs and the high cost of these drugs led to medicinal plants as an alternative against infectious disease. The objective of this study is to characterize different classes of secondary metabolites and to test the antibacterial activity of six plants: Bauhinia rufescens Lam, Blepharis linariifolia PERS, Chrozophora brocchiana Vis, Gardenia ternifolia Schum and Thonn, Indigofera astragalina DC, Phyllanthus pentandrus Schumach &Thonn, used in traditional medicine for children treatment. The extracts are obtained by aqueous decoction with the 1/10 model (50 g of each sample in 500 ml of solvent). Phytochemical screening of these six plants was carried out by standards tests, which are reactions of colorations, precipitation and complexation. The agr medium diffusion was used for the sensitivity test of the aqueous extracts of these plants against two strains of bacteria (two isolates of Salmonella typhimurium lettuce and clinical). Phytochemical screening showed the presence of polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids, coumarins, alkaloids, sterols/triterpenes in all tested extracts. All extracts contain saponins except Phyllanthus pentandrus. For free quinones, only Phyllanthus pentandrus and Indigofera astragalina showed a negative test. Among these six plants, five (5) showed an activity on Salmonella typhimurium at 200 mg/mL. C. brocchiana and P. pentandrus showed the best activity on S. typhimurium (lettuce) with 19.5±0.70 mm and 17.5±0.70 mm, respectively. At the concentration of 50 mg/mL, only these two plants are also showed antibacterial activity on S. typhimurium (lettuce). The results obtained indicate that these plants contain some secondary metabolites, some have antimiocrobial activity and constitute a scientific database for the research in the field of phytomedicines. These results will justify the use of these plants in the treatment of some infections.
