Antibacterial and Wound Healing Potential of Ethanolic Extract of Zingiber Officinale in Albino Rats

Abstract: Medicinal plants are used in a wide range in Sudan to treat several diseases, Zingiber officinale Roscoe is one of the plants that are central to the lives of traditional societies in Africa it has been reported as traditional folkloric medicine, the plant roots are used in some parts in Sudan for wound healing, this study aimed to assess the antibacterial and wound healing activity of Zingiber officinale ethanolic extract in wound infected albino rats and compare the effect of the plant against commercial reference drug against Staphylococcus aureus, methods of this study included fifteen swiss wistar albino rat, divided into three groups of five rats (Group 1 (wounded +infection, Group 2 wound +infection+ fusiderm ointment, Group 3 wound + infection +12% ethanol extract of Zingiber officinale with soft yellow paraffin), all results included microbial examination for bacterial count, histological examination for the presence of inflammatory cells and collagen and healing percentage measured by transparent ruler, the results of in vitro antimicrobial activity of the extract gave clear zones of inhibition on the standard strains of Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiellia pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, significant reduction of bacterial number observed in ginger treated group from.5×108cfu/ml to.5×102 cfu/ml on day 8 of dressing while the positive control group showed bacterial count reduction from.5×108cfu/ml to complete diminishing of bacterial infection. Significant difference in the wound closure was observed in positive control group (fusiderm) to give a percentage of 55.7% on day 4 and 91% on day 8. The ginger treatment group also showed faster wound healing with a percentage closed to positive control 51.4% on day 4 and 90.6% on day 8, while the wound healing rate was slow and took more than 8 days in negative control, histological examination of granulated tissue done by Haematoxylin and Eosin stain and van Gieson stain showed more collagen fibers formation and reduction of inflammatory cell during the healing period, finally the study concluded that Zingiber officinale ethanolic extract exert antibacterial and wound healing capacity, this study established a good support to the use of plants in herbal medicine and as abase for the development of new drugs.

Abstract: Hypertension is elevation of systolic blood pressure greater than or equal to 140 mm Hg and/or diastolic blood pressure greater than or equal to 90 mm Hg. It affects 1 billion people and accounts for approximately 7.1 million deaths annually. It is significant risk factor for cardiovascular disorders. Some medicinal plants are traditionally used to treat hypertension. Psidium guava is one of widely cultivated medicinal plant used as traditional medication for diabetes, vomiting, diarrhea and dyslipidemia. The study was designed to identify effect of P. guava leaf extract on hypertension in guinea pigs. The study was conducted on six male guinea pigs to measure the effect of ethanol P. guava leaf extract by using invasive method. The result was analyzed by using paired t-test, independent student t test, one –way ANOVA. Ethanol extract of P. guava leaf showed a significant (p= 0.001) ability to relax isolated aortic tissue of guinea pigs in dose dependent manner, after induction of aortic muscle contraction by high potassium chloride concentrations (80 mM KCl). The effects of P. guava leaf extract in relaxation contracted aortic tissue was may be due to numerous effect of phytochemicals.

Abstract: Chemical investigation of the stem bark of Ochthocosmus africanus resulted in the isolation of one new triterpene, ochtofridelane (1) along with four known compounds including stigmasterol (2), N-p-trans-coumaroyltyramine (3) and taraxerol (4), the structure of these compounds was established by analysis of their spectra and by comparison of their data with those published in the literature. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first report of chemical constituents of Ochthocosmus genus.

Abstract: Eucalyptus oil (EO), an essential oil isolated from Eucalyptus leaves, was examined for its effect on LPS and Klebsiella pneumoniae - induced COPD in rats. The COPD model was induced by instilling intratracheally with LPS and Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. P). The test compound, EO (30, 100 and 300 mg/kg), Prednisone Acetate (10 mg/kg) or vehicle was instilled intragastrically after three weeks exposure of LPS and K. P, lasted for 4 weeks. EO significantly reduced amounts of inflammatory cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and blood, and decreased bronchiolitis, emphysematous changes and thickness of bronchioles. It also significantly reduced the increased AB-PAS-positive goblet cells in bronchioles. Prednisone Acetate attenuated pulmonary inflammation and airway mucus hypersecretion, but no significant difference was found on emphysema. Pretreatment with EO markly reduced the production of proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-β in lung homogenate, significantly decreased the elevated malondialdehyde (MDA) level and and increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. These findings indicate that EO could exert an protective effect against LPS plus K. P-induced lung indury via inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines production and improvement of anti-oxidant status. Our results provide evidence that EO might have its potential to be a proper candidate drug in the treatment of COPD.
